HISTORY

Federated Community Church has roots that stretch back to the origins of Flagstaff in the late 1800's and to its first protestant churches, built at the end of the 19th century. Protestants - Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Baptist, and others - were pragmatic. They wanted to present and maintain a Protestant presence in Flagstaff.

By 1915, it was evident that these small, struggling, separate congregations with limited resources would have a hard time surviving if each continued to act alone. They also realized that they shared core beliefs and often worshipped together. So in 1915, Methodists and Presbyterians planned for "The Federated Church" and in January of 1916, the first combined church service was held.

The word "Community" was added to the title in the 1920s. During that decade other Protestant denominations were associated with the church. Over the years a number of these denominations withdrew as they built separate churches.

In the sixties, Flagstaff Federated Community Church incorporated, which transferred title of the property from the United Methodist Church and offered the local congregation a greater measure of independence and control. Today, Federated Community Church has Methodist, Presbyterian and Community membership rolls, a congregational diversity that is unique in Flagstaff. The church continues its historic ties to the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church, USA being served by and contributing to these denominations.
