Federated Church’s first Earth Sunday was in 1996. Christians for the Earth has been instrumental in planning all the Earth Sunday services, from finding guest pastors to Moments for Mission to music to liturgy. Federated’s pastors have been supportive of Earth Sunday since the beginning. Those pastors include Rev. Jim Thomas who was pastor at the first Earth Sunday, Rev. Tim Lusk, Rev. Bill VanLoan and Rev. Jed Schenck.
Guests in our pulpit for Earth Sunday have included Dr. Max Oelschlager who spoke on “Reflections on the Creation” in 2000. He teaches at NAU and has written many books including Caring for Creation: An Ecumenical Approach to the Environmental Crisis. In 2004 Dr. Arne Hassing, NAU Professor of Religious Studies and member of our congregation, preached on “In Him Were Created All Things”. In 2005 Dr. Arnold Brown, retired NAU Professor of Sociology and Baptist minister as well as a member of our congregation, preached on “In the Image of God”. He introduced a study on “Simpler Living, Compassionate Life” which began the afternoon of Earth Sunday. In 2006 Rev. Peter Sawtell of Eco-Justice Ministries preached on “A Blessed Way of Life”. After his Earth weekend with us which included a Saturday workshop, Federated became a Partner Church with his Eco-Justice Ministries.
The custom at Federated has become to have Earth Sunday two Sundays after Easter. This year Earth Day and Earth Sunday were on the same day! And this year we introduced our banner with the Christians for the Earth logo and our slogan “Mindful Choices for the Environment Are Spiritual Acts”.
