Did you know that global warming is hurting God’s earth? We, as people of faith, need to take action to address global warming by reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. Over half of the electricity in the U.S. is generated by coal-fired power plants, which release massive amounts of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas linked to global warming.
On Earth Sunday 2007 Christians for the Earth introduced The Light Shop which will be open the first Sunday of every month along with The Coffee Shop. Our theme for Earth Sunday 2007 was “global warming” so we thought the Light Shop was appropriate.
Since Christians for the Earth are sure that “Mindful Choices for the Environment Are Spiritual Acts”, it is easy for us to understand that we can slow global warming by changing one light bulb at a time!
At the Light Shop we sell individual CFLs so the members of our community can try a CFL if they have never used one. We also want people to be aware that CFLs come in many shapes and sizes. We have an inventory of 19 different kinds of bulbs. We also will be glad to search for any type of bulb that we don’t have.
In addition to The Light Shop on the first Sunday of each month, the CFLs are available in the church office everyday.
Remember that every CFL can prevent more than 450 pounds of emissions from a power plant over its lifetime. CFLs cost more initially, but they last up to 12 times longer and reduce electric costs.
