"We have not inherited the Earth from our Fathers; we are borrowing it from our children."
Native American saying
The youth at Federated Community Church are an energetic, motivated, and fun group. Their enthusiasm is infectious and they have been doing some great work for the church and the community.
This past year, the youth were very successful with the telephone book recycling program. They set the bar high with the goal of recycling 500 telephone books. That equates to saving 4,100 kilowatts of electricity - enough power to serve an average home for six months! It always means saving 7000 gallons of water, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and up to 31 trees! And in true Federated Youth fashion, they exceeded their goal of 500 and collected a whopping 660 telephone books.
The youth group was also very active with the city of Flagstaff’s Earth Day and participating with the Shared Earth Network. Over 1000 people attending this event and the youth provided much of the entertainment for the kids - creating and playing games all with an earth-friendly message!
Another exciting event the youth group is working towards is a missionary trip to Honduras. This experience promises spiritual growth without borders and a chance to share and learn with others of faith. To help make this trip to Honduras a reality, the youth group is actively fundraising. One project they’ve taken on is that of making gift baskets. These baskets are available for purchase and make wonderful gifts for those special moments.
Our CFL lightbulb program was initiated in 2000 as a joint project of the church youth group and Christians for the Earth and is still in effect today. The young people demonstrated the effectiveness of CFL's, sold the light bulbs to the congregation and kept part of the proceeds to benefit youth programs. Our current lightbulb project is an outgrowth of the initial youth project.
